Historic Cable Car

San Francisco cable car No. 25, which was taken out of service for an extensive refurbishing over nearly two years, was back on the rails picking up passengers Wednesday on the hilly Powell Street line. The cable car, built 118 years ago, had last undergone a major face-lift in 1976. The rebuilt cable car is now painted in the same red and cream color scheme that was last used on the Powell Street line during the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 - a disaster it survived. The rebuilding was completed by a crew of Municipal Transportation Agency crafts workers who keep the historic fleet - a designated national landmark - in good working condition.
