Pet Trust Funds

Ellen Maurer, 86, of San Mateo also has made plans for her 7-year-old Maine coon cat, Shasta. Maurer adopted the deaf and declawed cat from the Peninsula Humane Society in January.

Maurer lives with her daughter, Heidi Maurer, 51, who would take care of the cat, but the elder Maurer worried about what would happen if they died at the same time.

"I want to make sure that (Shasta) is taken care of the way she's used to," Ellen Maurer said. That's why she has arranged for the humane society to put Shasta into a foster home until she is adopted permanently.
